What in the world is Electroacoustic and who thought they could get away with such an oxymoron of a music style?

This is who…In The Cinema...

Ryan Hughes – vocals, guitar, piano, synths, glockenspiel

Joe Hughes – drums, percussion, samples & elements

Their MySpace page also describes them as “Beat-driven folktronica.”

So what do I think of them? I don’t think they can be called acoustic, although I can understand that some of their music does have an acoustic simplicity about it. To me acoustic is far more stripped down and In The Cinema has far too much texture and intricate extras. Thankfully even with the electronical elements it never becomes too house techno or overbearing dance music. So that is how they can be both acoustic and electric, it’s all about the combination. They have a perfect blend in the compositions of their music and I very much enjoy each and every song on their “For The Struggle” album.

In The Cinema isn’t just another band trying to be trendy. They use all of their indie elements wisely and mesh together simplicity with layered beauty with fantastic precision. It has been a long since I can honestly say I have heard an album and wanted to listen to the whole thing over again without skipping a song. In The Cinema’s “For The Struggle” is just that good, grab it up, you won’t be disappointed.

I should also mention that I loved their album packaging. The album comes in this white cardboard envelope with a sketched sticker and four crayons, it’s just so cool. My co-worker DQ says she would buy the album just for the packaging. I assured her she would also enjoy the music while she was coloring the artwork.

Enjoy!
