Is advertising dead?

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

I just read an interesting article about advertising being "dead". And I'd like to know your thoughts on the matter. Is advertising dead?
If you are working for a traditional advertising agency, it is time to quit your job. No we are not being bold, we are giving you some sound advice. Many of the large agencies are simply adapting... way... too... slow. They are sitting around brain storming the next 30 second spot, maybe they are even trying to be progressive and have hired an "interaction designer" who is hot with actionscript. It is too late however, they will not last. Mark our words.
Wow, that is pretty brazen. It's the introductory paragraph of this article. The article posted on March 31, 2008 at Blogfire, which is a known site about marketing, business, advertising, etc. strictly related to blogging.

Their suggestion is to, "Forget about the thirty second spot. Delete your banner templates. Throw away your ad rate cards and media kits." Good grief. You better have some fiercely vivid content going on there.

My professional title is "web developer" and my degree is in "interactive media design" so hearing something like this obviously is a bit startling. I do not fear losing my job. I'm good at what I do. Print is dead, but online media is not and I'm not saying I live to create advertisements because I don't. But I do still think they function quites well online. I'm not sure a tombstone should be engraved just yet.

    Promote your design

    Wednesday, July 18, 2007

You can't just carry a business card around attached to a pin or on a necklace. Promoting your business is one thing, but waving it in someones face is quite another.

And now that it's illegal to put signs on along the road for an extended period of time, at least here in Delaware you can get fined, it's hard to find affordable means of advertising or marketing yourself.

I have an online portfolio of my work, but I'm sure it doesn't show up in the top of the Google search results. (And quite frankly I'm afraid to look).

So, it might be interesting to see how magnetic signs for your car would work. Lord knows there is quite enough traffic around here for enough people to see it. I've seen Real Estate Signs stuck magnetically to people's cars with their broker information and their contact information.

Places like BuildASign allow you to choose a magnetic sign size, customize the look of it, and order it very quickly and easily. I wonder what the stats of this type of promotional material are and if they allow you to get really artsy with the customization. I'm going to have to give it a look. =o)
