How to Design Website which Google Likes?
Here are some of tips listed...
Design and Content Guidelines
1) Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page
should be reachable from at least one static text link.
2) Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the
important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100
or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate
pages.
3) Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that
clearly and accurately describe your content.
Refer to the link above for more.

Lolita inspiration, css trick and web tips
Wednesday, March 11, 2009
Oooo I like this article/tutorial on dynamic buttons using CSS.The technique is very simple. If we want to have a dynamic-width button, we have to find a way to stretch it horizontally. We will accomplish this if we create two background images that will define the button: one for the left side and one for the right side.

I recently read yet another article about web design mistakes. I think it is important to at least look at these articles because sometimes I do learn something and with web development constantly changing it doesn't hurt to keep informed.
One mistake mentioned is not having a good page title. This is something I know and yet even still continue to forget from time to time when building new sites.
"A good title is critical for getting good search engine positions and the most vital thing - the click-through. With the title, you are always walking a tightrope. You need a title with your most important keyword near the beginning but it should still appeal to the human reading the results."

Lolita is a visual inspiration-bank, full of fantasies, dreams - a filter of colors and shadows, a silhouette in the dark. Hopefully making your pulse beat, body shiver.. The hand-picked images put together are also the basis of the story about a young Lolita, living in Stockholm, Sweden - inviting you to take a walk with her, in silence..
Initially I stumbled across Lolita under a graphic design pretense. I found their "the process" animated graphic which had me cracking up.
But there is a fount of inspiration at this website which goes way beyond graphics. Some of the photography on here is just so thoughtfully amazing that I have spent a great deal of time looking through their archives.

Signage and color contrast
Contrast between the foreground and background is one of the most important factors for the ease of reading. If coloured text is used on a bright background the contrast will be weak, for optimal contrast results is white text against dark colored backgrounds. In signage & wayfinding design color is the combining factor to harmonize the sign with the environment. Color programs will distinguish signs from each other and can offer an indication of the message without having to be able to understand the language of the sign.

Eric Mathew and Andrew Ooi's origami light fixtures are made of printed Japanese paper. The print is of wood grain and though the lamps are made of paper they are surprisingly robust, as wood would be. My guide at CUTMR, show curator Jeremy Vandermeij, had this to say about Andrew and Eric; "[they] share a common interest in the elegant versatility of paper as a design material. Their work utilizes paper as a valuable commodity, in contrast to its popular public conception as a ubiquitous disposable resource. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese uses of paper in the production of items of everyday use, their work has evolved to include lighting, furniture, and ornament."Labels: eric mathew, floating floors, lights, links, nick kempinski, plants, portfolio, recipe, video editing, web design

"For our new challenge, we are asking readers to design, or adapt a published design (with appropriate credit), and build a 50 W amplifier to follow a 5 W/40 meter transceiver. This could be used behind one of the radios from the original challenge, or from other QRP radios at similar power level."
There will be two cash prizes for this challenge. In addition to the prizes, the winners will receive the usual QST page rate for published articles.

Poster Art, jQuery and Hotel Lobby or Home page?
Tuesday, February 3, 2009
Smileycat.com has a really great article called, "Are You Focusing Too Much on Your Home Page?" In a conversation with a client the idea of a website's main page being the most important part is debated. The argument goes on to compare a website to a hotel. An excerpt is pasted below for you to read, but I highly recommend you click the link above to read the full article. I explained to her that she should think of her home page like the lobby of a hotel (an idea coined, I believe, also by Jared Spool).
When visitors arrive at your hotel, certainly they should find that the lobby represents the hotel favorably. It should be attractive, spacious, with elegant lighting, welcoming colors, and the odd feature here and there.
The lobby should make it easy for the visitor to orient themselves - to see where the front desk is and where the lifts are. It should make it easy for the guest to find out any important information at a glance - upcoming events or where the conference is being held.
However, hotels are ultimately judged by the quality of their rooms. The last hotel I stayed in was the W in Seattle. While it has a nice lobby, it's the rooms that really make a stay there memorable.

Web design predictions for 2009
Sunday, January 4, 2009
Reading through predictions of what is in store for web design in 2009, designers are feeling hand drawn websites will continue to grow. With blogs being more and more popular this is probably a fair prediction. Bloggers create or grab drawings for their blog templates and *poof* it becomes their unique little portal.Other predictions include advancements in mobile web design. Also a fair assumption considering the mass craze of the iPhone. And all the piggy back mobile devices which are cropping up to try and steal the iPhone's thunder.
And then of course there is speculation that social media networks will continue to propel and evolve. I'm not sure if I agree with that prediction however, because I feel if anything they have just plateaued. There are too many branches competing for that market and even if a new network comes into the mix it will inevitably fail within 6 months trying to grab an audience from people who already use Twitter, Facebook and/or Digg.
I'd like to see interactive media becoming more popular. Yes this is selfish since my degree is in interactive media, but my reasons are for the greater good, aren't they? Interactive media design is just so much more fun, it's more like creating a science experiment game type interface to see how people interact with your work. Of course this has been battled because others feel the internet should be for information alone and you don't need bells and whistles. Then of course there is the whole issue of search engine optimization and the fact that rankings are almost completely halted if your site has even one embed of flash. But we'll see. I feel like Google could continue tweaking their web crawlers and perhaps dig into the fantastic realm of interactive design.
Thoughts?

Web design inspiration
Tuesday, July 3, 2007This is the site that is currently being featured on CSS and design sites for web design. Biola Undergrad is part of the Biola University's website. This is a nationally-ranked private Christian university located in Southern California.

I think for a University website it's pretty darn cool. Too often you see those cookie cutter websites for high education because people think they need to be professional and clean. I wish designers were given reign to step out of the box and do something more visually appealing. I think prospective students would enjoy the change.

Color theory disaster
Friday, June 29, 2007Jinkies...this is just bad. I love bright, vibrant colors. Carrie can attest to that, but it's difficult to read anything on the web when it is placed on top of neon yellow or pink. Color theory professionals everywhere are going to cringe when they see this website. And really, it makes me nauseous.
So why do I care?
Well, because it's the official site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. You'd think they would have had more sense than to choose colors other than bright cyan blue atop bright yellow...
I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so mean, but I can't even look at this page, it seriously is piercing my retinas.
P.S. I know I have color issues on my site, but trust me, I'm aware and will fix them.
