| Stop Puppy Mills |
 The Humane Society of the United States' eight-month investigation reveals that many Petland stores across the country are marketing puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers.
America's largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores, Petland Inc., is also the nation's largest retail supporter of puppy mills. Despite assurances by staff at many Petland stores visited by The HSUS and on Petland's corporate website that the company knows its breeders and deals only with those who have "the highest standards of pet care," many of the puppies sold at Petland stores come from massive commercial breeders in Missouri and other Midwestern puppy mill states, where hundreds of breeding dogs are packed into cramped, barren cages.
These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.

| America Recycles Day |
-730523.jpg) Tomra of North America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tomra Systems ASA (TOMRA) and leading global provider of advanced recycling solutions, today launched a blog devoted to recycling and the environment in celebration of America Recycles Day, held on November 15, 2008.
The nation's composting and recycling rate rose from just 7.7% of the waste stream in 1960, to 17% by 1990, and is currently up around 33%, according to the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), organizers of America Recycles Day. According to the NRC, the amount of energy saved from recycling aluminum and steel cans, plastic PET and glass containers, newsprint and corrugated packaging last year alone was equal to:
-- The amount of electricity consumed by 17.8 million Americans in one
year.
-- 29% of nuclear electricity generation in the U.S. in one year.
-- 7.9% of electricity generation from fossil fuels in the U.S. in one
year.
-- 11% of the energy produced by coal-fired power plants in the U.S.
-- The energy supplied from 2.7% of imported barrels of crude oil into
the U.S.
-- The amount of gasoline used in almost 11 million passenger automobiles
in one year.
Trying to tie this in with America Recycles Day, I'd like to mention a shop I found while perusing the Holiday Look Book at Poshmama.com. The shop is Kir DeVries and in the look book they were promoting the Earthlust Stainless Steel Water Bottles. I immediately thought about getting some of these as Christmas presents, because they are not only environment friendly but also pocket friendly in terms of cost.
