This morning, Sun Microsystems announced plans to acquire MySQL AB...the purchase comes with an $8.5 billion dollar price tag.

Should it put programmers on alert? I doubt it. I don't think the language is in jeopardy, it will probably be enhanced during integration but I am sure this will take many phases and is cause for many questions.

Sun has, for some time now, been the largest contributor to Open Source. It was only a matter of time before they started claiming territories. There should be no worries at this time, the same people will be maintaining MySQL.

It bothers me a bit that this news has caused a wave of panic or anxiety amongst users. Perhaps I am too optomisitc but I don't think Sun will go around firing people and stopping development. That would be foolish on their part and cause them too lose some credibility.

Hopefully this will mean better technologies and advancements in the development of additional (or forgotten) platforms for coders. Linux has soaked up the wealth thus far and I think Sun will try and branch it out a bit more. We shall see.
