When I started answering questions on Mahalo I had no idea there would be so many web related questions. People wanting advice on domain names, where to register their information and who to provide a web hosting environment. Of course each person has a different reason and want in terms of whatever site they're going to build so they're all looking for different things.

I think it's helpful to refer people to WebHostingGeeks.com because it has a wide variety of helpful resources in terms of what a web host can and should provide, how much space and for how much money. It has the information people need if they really want to make an educated decision.

Right off the bat you'll instantly be faced with a chart which gives a list of web host providers. There is a star based ranking system, a list of features, a list of bonus features and a link to reviews from real people like you and me.

But what I found most helpful and most interesting for the "Best of" awards. There are lists which share the best web hosts for blogs, forums, multiple domains, php based content management systems or dedicated servers. There are also lists which specifically cater to budgets which is very good during these times of economic struggles.

Even if you have no reason to use it for searching out a new host, you can be one of the good Samaritans who adds a customer review about services you have used before. So have at it.

This is a sponsored post.

Say hi to the Poken, a cutesy RFID reader, available in Voodoo, Bee, Alien or Panda form. Carry this critter with you daily and when you meet someone worthy of being added to your Facebook friends list, hi five your Poken against theirs and their data will be wirelessly transferred. When the Poken is hi fived it glows green out of joy/envy/despair and all you need to do now is plug it into your computer to complete the friend exchange. Details will be uploaded to the Poken website, where you can also share pics, videos and daily updates.

Their site says, "We're not another social network. You've already got that.
We've thought bigger to let you instantly bridge the gap between the people you meet in the real world and those you stay connected to online."

A small logo of each social network you choose is displayed as a link on your Poken Card, which shows only your most basic information. Your contacts can view your Poken Card on doyoupoken.com, but, if they want to see more, they only have to click the logo to see your profile on the social networking site you've chosen to share.

Sounds like Feedster or Friendster, but with a cute glowing toy thrown into the mix.

When you're desperate to find a way to drag yourself out of bed, you might look into this quirky alarm clock. It's sure to keep your mornings interesting.

When it's time to wake up you'll hear a count down and then the rocket will shoot into the air. In order to make the alarm stop going off, you have to grab the rocket and put it back. After rushing around to grab it, you'll likely be wide awake and ready to get ready for work or school. Luckily these are available in the UK as well as the US from two different vendors. You can get it in the US on Perpetual Kid for $24.99.

Pandora has registered its 20 millionth user since they began offering subscriptions which allow unlimited listening. The three-year old music streaming service is trying to hold its own despite tough economics and recent layoffs.

Its music-recommendation engine pumps out personalized radio stations over the Web, and its iPhone app remains one the top free apps on iTunes (currently No. 21).

    Any ideas about this one?

Three of four undersea cables that route internet traffic from Asia to North America have inexplicably been cut, meaning that your international WoW server may be a bit slow this evening. The good news is that this fiasco clearly hasn't affected you yet. The AP has confirmed via Egypt's communications ministry that the cables have indeed been severed, causing massive outages in select portions of the world.

Apparently a Japanese civilian group, The Campaign Against Surveillance Society, is asking Google to shut down its Street View offering. This is hardly the first time that people have complained about Street View, but, honestly, it's difficult to see how this is a "surveillance" issue or a violation of anyone's privacy.

My husband, son and I had quite the laugh when we read a recent Engadget headline which doted a pine-scented laptop.

Yes, that's right, a pine-scented laptop. What would be even sillier would be scratch-n-sniff laptop protector sleeves. Hehehehe, I'm giggling just thinking about it.

I mean I suppose if you don't mind air freshener type smells it could add a nice clean fragrance to your office or dress up the air in the train while you're commuting.

I predict the next scent will be cotton breeze. No really, I think maybe they'll end up with a Nintendo DS which smells like strawberries, color it pink and have Strawberry Shortcake sell it.

I wish you could hear the sound of our five-year-old giggling, it would make this entire post all the more amusing for you.

You know how on Yahoo you can ask questions and wait for fellow Yahoo users to answer them? Then you get to rate the answer you receive and share which answer you felt best handled the question. I've answered some before and have been excited to find my answer was considered best.

Well, now there is a site which can actually pay you if you get the best answer. The site is Mahalo and if people are willing to pay for answers that means those who provide the best might get to cash in.

    How dos it work?

    The site says this:

    Each Mahalo Dollar costs $1.

Once you earn more than 40 Mahalo Dollars, you can request to be paid via PayPal. Each Mahalo Dollar is currently worth $0.75 when paid out via PayPal.

So it might take awhile to reach $40, but hey every little bit helps these days and I'd say it's worth a shot.

Language translation site Nice Translator uses Google Translate's results but wraps them in a more dynamic front end that offers multiple translations as-you-type.

Type your phrase into Nice Translator, which auto-detects what language you're inputting, and watch as it lists multiple translations, in real-time, as you type.

Techcrunch's Layoff Tracker is now past 100,000 lost jobs (109,629, as of this writing) across nearly 300 different technology and media companies both large and small. To put this in perspective, Citigroup alone announced 52,000 layoffs in November, and across the U.S. economy, just counting September and October, there were nearly 500,000 unemployment claims as a result of mass layoffs. Yippee...

You may or may not have heard about the HP Magic Giveaway. I just read about it myself this morning on Techie Diva.

Apparently, you can win $6,000 worth of HP merchandise and 50 different blogs around the world are hosting the contest. Techie Diva is hosting one which starts today on December 6, 2008 and ends on December 11, 2008. All you have to do is write a short paragraph on your blog about what you will do with the package and why you should win it. You add a link in your post to Techie Diva, send them an e-mail and wah-la you're registered. A winner will be randomly chosen, but there are a few ways to earn extra entries which you can learn at the Techie Diva website.

If I were to win the prize I must admit I'm not exactly sure what I would do. Our home was recently burglarized and both my husband and I had our laptops stolen. Fortunately, home insurance will help cover some of these losses, but nothing to the extent of the prizes HP is offering. Their TouchSmart PC is just so amazing to look at in the specs and images that if I had it in front of me I think it would take me a few minutes to compose myself and stop drooling. Myself aside, I know my brother is looking for a new laptop and so perhaps I'd give it to him. I think I would also ask the priest at St. Marget's of Scotland if they could use any part of the package for their offices or connected school. Most of all, I'm pleased HP is offering such a truly magical contest and it is exciting to know Techie Diva is a part of it.

Good luck to all of those who enter, it really is a fantastic opportunity!
