When I started answering questions on Mahalo I had no idea there would be so many web related questions. People wanting advice on domain names, where to register their information and who to provide a web hosting environment. Of course each person has a different reason and want in terms of whatever site they're going to build so they're all looking for different things.

I think it's helpful to refer people to WebHostingGeeks.com because it has a wide variety of helpful resources in terms of what a web host can and should provide, how much space and for how much money. It has the information people need if they really want to make an educated decision.

Right off the bat you'll instantly be faced with a chart which gives a list of web host providers. There is a star based ranking system, a list of features, a list of bonus features and a link to reviews from real people like you and me.

But what I found most helpful and most interesting for the "Best of" awards. There are lists which share the best web hosts for blogs, forums, multiple domains, php based content management systems or dedicated servers. There are also lists which specifically cater to budgets which is very good during these times of economic struggles.

Even if you have no reason to use it for searching out a new host, you can be one of the good Samaritans who adds a customer review about services you have used before. So have at it.

Defined. A rule of thumb is a homemade recipe for making a guess.

"Try this: Count the number of times a cricket chirps in 15 seconds, and add 37. No, you didn't just calculate your age in cricket years - you measured the temperature outdoors in degrees Fahrenheit. You just used a rule of thumb."

And this site has every "rule of thumb" known to man in their database. It's so interesting! If you don't see one and you know it is true, you can contribute it to the site.

Here is another rule of thumb from the site:
"A lobster tail should always curl. If this does not happen, the lobster is dead or dying. If the tail does not curl on a boiled lobster, the lobster was dead before it was boiled."

See, there is a plethora of tips you didn't even know existed!

Laughing Squid recently ran a post about the Human Calendar. At first I thought it was interesting, but then when I realized just how it worked I was just in awe. Not only is it a human calendar, but it functions. Since I'm slow it took me some time to figure out why the faces were all looking at a specific square.

Marcia! Marcia! Marcia! Each day the faces change and direct your view to the correct date. It's very cool and I give major props to Craig Giffen and of course his bunch of brady's inspiration.

Craig created the human clock several years ago and has been working on the calendar on and off for quite some time. It's done. It's awesome.

    Check it out.

You know I have to say I thought I was even geekier than 86% so this surprised me.

The little blurb said, "Ever lose your car keys and wish life had ctrl+f? Have you trained your parakeet to whistle songs from the Ocarina of Time? You could be a geek: take our 2 minute quiz to determine how much geek is coursing through your veins!" And so I HAD to take the quiz, haha!

    86% Geek

Then to be even stranger I decided to look up the definition of geek. I found some rather interesting ones and so I thought I'd share.

Definitions of Geek on the Web:
Geek is a common term for someone who is obsessed by their computer, and has achieved a high level of expertise in their chosen area.

A term similar to nerd, but slightly less pejorative in tone.

To quote from The New Hacker's Dictionary, a computer geek is "one who eats (computer) bugs for a living." One who fulfills all the dreariest negative stereotypes about hackers: an asocial, malodorous, pasty-faced monomaniac with all the personality of a cheese grater. ...

A person who knows all the terms listed here and many more. Normally wears a tanktop, thick rimmed glasses and a bow-tie. Due their vast knowledge of computer termanology, they don't have a social life. They also live at home with their mothers.

A carnival performer who does disgusting acts; eccentric: a person with an unusual or odd personality.

A geek is an individual who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd. ...

Geek! is the second EP by My Bloody Valentine, and their first to feature bass player Debbie Googe. It was released in December 1985.
    ROFLS!

Now you can show the world just how geeky you are by sporting this body art from Archie McPhee. Nothing shakes up a n00b more than going nose to nose with a with a Geek bearing Death and PWN3D on his arm. Or perhaps you can kick it old school with an Atari joystick. But for an understated yet nonetheless geeky look, I'd go with the power button.
