Death Cab for Cutie's follow up to
The Plan, was released today, and word is, that the band has changed it's tune a bit, engaging in darker sounds than previous. Where Plans emphasized "Cutie," Narrow Stairs emphasizes "Death." Enough said.
We all know how people like change. Or not. But I maintain it is important for musicians to try and expand their comfort zone. While I prefer the lighter tunes, I don't hate these dark tracks. It shows they have something a bit more intense going on and sometimes it's good to include cinema-worthy materials into your repertoire.
Narrow Stairs has a whole new sense of urgency for the band; a somber explosion of sorts. That's not to mean it's loud or powerful, it just means it's fiercely brooding.
