With a name that's a nod to a '80s comedy film co-directed by (and starring) Neil Young-a film about the apocalypse and a roadside diner-we weren't sure what to expect from Human Highway at first. Especially considering who's steering the ship: a golden-piped Jim Guthrie and ex-Unicorn/main Islands man Nick Thornburn.

Jim is best-known for his releases on Three Gut Records, both with Royal City and as a solo artist, when he received a Juno nomination for 2004's Now, More Than Ever. Thorburn first gained international exposure with the Unicorns in 2003, and now fronts the super-pop group Islands.

As you might imagine given their pedigrees, the pair blends together beautifully, delivering on their promise of providing us with "lullaby-type stuff." As Thornburn told ChartAttack.com, "We're really inspired by Everly Brothers harmonies, singing ... It's really low-key, just like good times." Or as Guthrie added, you can expect a lot of "hot man-on-man vocal action" from the duo. That's the thing: as "low-key" as Human Highway's debut LP is, it actually translates quite well to the stage.

If you saw the group's live debut at Cake Shop in New York last year and they were already as tight as Thornburn's other gig. Maybe even more so since Human Highway's songs avoid the sprawl of Islands' oeuvre for a focused full-front attack of merry melodies and candied chords. Be ready to sing along by the second song.
