Death Cab for Cutie's follow up to The Plan, was released today, and word is, that the band has changed it's tune a bit, engaging in darker sounds than previous. Where Plans emphasized "Cutie," Narrow Stairs emphasizes "Death." Enough said.

We all know how people like change. Or not. But I maintain it is important for musicians to try and expand their comfort zone. While I prefer the lighter tunes, I don't hate these dark tracks. It shows they have something a bit more intense going on and sometimes it's good to include cinema-worthy materials into your repertoire.

Narrow Stairs has a whole new sense of urgency for the band; a somber explosion of sorts. That's not to mean it's loud or powerful, it just means it's fiercely brooding.

In tribute of Lucky Pup...

My Mom's pup had to be put down today. She took Lucky into the vet for various reasons. Lucky was 12 years old and she had been sick for quite some time. The vet thinks it must have been a brain tumor and told my Mom that Lucky wasn't the same dog anymore.

Needless to say my Mom is heart broken. Lucky was a very energetic and happy puppy. She ran around like crazy, made us laugh and became the unconditional friend my Mom needed during lonely times. It will take a long time for my Mom to come to terms with this loss. She is grieving, feeling lost and guilty, but I believe she is extremely brave and that this was a selfless act.

Listen:
Rufus Thomas - "The Dog" (mp3)
Tom Waits - "Time" (mp3)

And in completely other music news...we can look forward to May for a new Death Cab for Cutie album!!! Woohoo! The album includes a "nine-minute jam" called "I Will Possess Your Heart."
