American Idol finalist from the sixth season, Melinda Doolittle is releasing her debut solo album, Coming Back To You on February 3, 2009 and I've listening to an advanced release which is really a great piece of work.

While I am not an avid American Idol watcher I did watch part of the season and Melinda Doolittle was a shining star from day one. She was definitely a favorite of mine and I think the only reason she didn't win is because her image didn't fit the "pop" mold that American Idol seems to be stuck on.

Recorded with a team of live musicians in Nashville and New York City, Coming Back to You displays Melinda's extraordinary talent and versatility as a vocalist and sees her seamlessly transcend genres as she combines R&B, soul, blues, jazz and funk to create a sound all her own. From the first note, Melinda reaches back into a rich pool of musical influences and carries the torch of the greats - Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle - into the musical landscape of today.

"I'm so excited to be using live instruments and to be singing music that really paints a picture," said Melinda. "I knew my task was to just go in the studio and be me and the music would take care of the rest."

My favorite track on the album is "Dust My Broom" it's just so lively and funky, you can tell she had fun singing and recording it. Melinda loves to sing, she's a natural and she's comfortable with the songs on this record.

Stream: "It's Your Love"

My hope is that she stays true to her calling, remains natural and doesn't let anyone veer her off her calling path.
