Believing that good bands function as families,
Overman's constituent members: Aaron Kelly (vocals, bass), Matthew Radowski (vocals, rhythm guitar), Russell Eggenberger (vocals, lead guitar) and Jason Burley (drums) share an address in Joliet, Illinois, a five-bedroom farmhouse that serves as an ideal cauldron for the simmering brew of the band's creative process and experimentation. Their common dwelling enables both an intimate connection between bandmates and around-the-clock collaboration, operating as ground zero as the band has grown, since its formation in 2003, from a local barroom favorite to a regular on Chicago's live music scene.
Overman's latest release,
The Evolution EP, features the single "Evolution Rocks," a much-blogged-over ode to Darwin that's become an anthem for science teachers nationwide and overseas and has received the endorsement of The National Science Teachers Association.
Sometimes when I listen to new music in my inbox I'll just start laughing or my eyes will bug out of my head because I honestly can't believe these people think their music is approachable. I really shouldn't feel that way about Overman, because I like the tunes, I like the potential, but...
There are moments of scientific dialogue which instantly have me thinking of a Mystery Science Theater episode. And yes, I watch MST and I like it, I'm not ashamed to admit this, so yes the dialogue amuses me. However, this band will not be a hit unless they imagine themselves on Sesame Street or the Magic School Bus.
With that said, I think you'll understand when you take a listen to "Evolution Rocks." I also think you'll agree they do sound good and they could come off with a Barenaked Ladies vibe if they cleaned up their music a bit. Definitely take the time to listen to all of their music, not just this one track, because I think you'll find they have a great style. As for naming the EP after the more hokey track, maybe their aim is to go educational. In that case, they've got it made.
