When thinking about this time of year and different movies that make it extra special I always fall back on the movies from my past. They aren't all the typical "Halloween" movie but for one reason or another they get me in the spirit.
You know those movies where you just want to put on your sweatshirt and cozy pajama pants, curl up on the couch underneath a warm blanket and reminisce about the good 'ol days... Don't tell me you don't crack up at the thought of Data and his "pinchers of peril" hahahaha!
"This is my supply closet. You'll find everything you need - brooms, dust pans, insect spray... I would really like the house clean when they tear it down. Clarke, can you translate?"
-Irene Walsh
"If you do a bad job you'll be locked in here with the cockroaches for two weeks without food or water."
-Mouth (Clarke)
And of course Gremlins is a classic. I love that movie and it can be watched all year long but I find myself wanting to watch it around Halloween and Christmas.
"The most important rule of all, no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never, NEVER feed him after midnight."
Tell me which movies get you in a certain fun spirit?
Somewhere someone had quite the laugh when they put up the movies showing in their theater. One of those teenage popcorn shuffling assistant managers got a little ornery.
I must say it was well thought out and I would have had to give the person a high five. Though I'm sure the uptight public who got offended probably caused a stink. And for that reason I am posting the photo so the fun can live on!
Being the music and movie fanatic that I am, I often flip through the Internet pages and see what the critics have to say about the latest goings on in the entertainment world.
Fortunately, I won't let their rants and/or raves deter me from having my own very strong opinion, but it's still amusing to do. So let's talk about Critics Rant!
Do you want to read movie reviews, movie discussions, video games and tv shows all in the same place AND also get a chance to comment? You can even win DVDs just by giving your opinion. (Casino Royale is the featured DVD giveaway this week, awesome movie so go for it!)
Oh you know you do!
One little excerpt from their review on the new Harry Potter movie will quickly show you their writing style.
"Throw in a love interest for Harry and one hell of a magic battle at the end, and you get a recipe for billions, as J.K. Rowling has discovered."
It's casual, it's real and it's fun to read through. It's not the normal garbage and snobbery you hear from other critic sites. Critics Rant is actually entertaining in and of itself, without having to bash anything...well..unless bashing is entirely necessary.
Plus with each review on the page you'll have hyperlinks to rss feeds, permalinks, printable pages, tell-a-friend AND of course as mentioned before there is the opportunity to supply your own rant. =o) Fun times by all!
This brilliant movie came out on DVD a week or two ago, but I just recently purchased it for my son Braeden. "Arthur and the Invisibles" is such a delightfully cute movie.
The invisibles are actually Minimoys and they are tiny little elves that live underground. Arthur is a ten-year-old boy living with his Grandmother out in the country. He spends his time reading, pretending and building things his Grandfather used to write about in journals.
Arthur's Grandfather has been missing for some time and his Grandmother is going to lose the house if she can't may a large some of money within two days. He tells his Grandmother that they can take whatever they want, but they will not take her house. This leads Arthur into a wonderful adventure when he shrinks down to Minimoy size and goes underground to find his Grandfather's buried treasure.
It's a very cute story, I absolutely loved it and so did Braeden. I highly recommend buying or renting this movie for your family.
Many people have superstitions; they knock on wood and say "bless you" when someone sneezes. You hear people say "don't jinx me" or "13 is an unlucky number." Perhaps they believe in those things, but what makes those things so powerful? As with most fears, it is a fear of the unknown or unexplainable. The word supernatural pertains to forces regarded as beyond nature; they cannot be explained from the laws of the natural world. Ah, so you see, perhaps more people believe and have experience something supernatural than you originally thought.
Stephen King believes in the supernatural. This is why he writes about it so very well. It is almost as if a forces guides his pen, wouldn't you say? Can you really explain how one man can have over 50 bestselling horror novels?
And so the premise behind his novel "1408" is with a fictional horror writer Mike Enslin who only believes what he can see with his own two eyes. His beliefs are tested after he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel. Enslin ignores the warnings of the hotel manager, Mr. Olin who knows not all myths are frauds.
Dimension Films has turned this horror novel into a movie. John Cusack plays Mike Enslin and Samuel L. Jackson plays Mr. Olin in the big screen version of Stephen King's "1408." The 1408 Movie tagline is: "No one lasts more than an hour."
Everyone knows, or should know, that I do believe in the supernatural. And I have seen and been in contact with things I cannot explain or even claim they are from this world. There are good spirits and there are evil spirits. Both of which I can attest to with absolute knowing and not just a belief. And when you encounter an evil being, you will never forget it. There is a house on the street where I live which I will never set foot in, nor will I set foot on the property. A teenage boy was murdered in this house many years ago. The people who live there now have told me drawers open, pens write, closet doors shut...all by themselves. But it wasn't until I saw him in the window that I really knew he was not to be reckoned with. I wish I had just believed what the residents of the house had told me, because the vision I saw will never leave my mind. I am sure Mike Enslin in the 1408 Movie, felt the same way. There is an afterlife, there are other dimensions and all realms can be breached.
Johnny Depp, be still my beating heart. Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow, Captain Jack Sparrow, has always been crazy, but he surely proved it this time around with all of his mind twisting hallucinations. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were amazing in the movie as well and they make a great on screen couple. And the director, Gore Verbinski, definitely out did himself.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is an awesome movie. AWESOME! If you haven't seen it then you need to see it. I'm not sure I understood the whole thing with Davey Jones and Calypso, but it was still an interesting addition to the story. Make sure you stay put through the seamlessly never ending credits, because they do end and there is a surprise. (Not really a surprise, but there is footage).
Anyone who gave this movie bad reviews probably just did it out of spite, just like they did with Spider-man 3. Yes, the movie was long, but not too long. Even my three-year-old son sat through it with only needing one potty break. Some of you might think I'm crazy for taking him to see that movie, but he loves pirates and it is just a movie.
Lionsgate Films has given two posters to display as promotional material for their new movie "Bug," starring Ashley Judd. With one poster showing a solemn, yet stern, looking Judd with the silhouette of another face transposed in the shadows of her mind. This poster ties in with the tag line of paranoia being contagious; the visual implications come through loud and clear. Judd's character will certainly go through an inner struggle.
With antennae, legs and wings abstracted into one dark image, we see a picture of Judd again looking quite forlorn int he midst of it all. What is she thinking, what is she looking at? Both posters leave you with the desire to find out what exactly is going on. Makes you want to grab a sneak peek and look at the trailer, doesn't it?
We have seen Ashley Judd in many genres of movies. She's been in the sweet, chic flicks like "Someone Like You" and the drama/suspense titles like "Double Jeopardy" and "Kiss the Girls." Now it's time to see her in a pure horror role in the movie "Bug."
Ashley Judd plays Agnes White, a lonely woman running from her violent ex-husband played by Harry Connick, Jr. She gets caught in the delusions of a man who sees bugs everywhere. Michael Shannon plays the war veteran, Peter who is seeing creepy crawlies. Peter was at war in Iraq and he confides in Agnes information about cult suicides and secret government experiment on soldiers. One of those experiments being the "aphids" which are bugs that he claims were placed under his skin.
William Friedkin turned the award-winning 2004 Off-Broadway play "Bug," into a white knuckle movie not for the faint of heart. With themes ranging from domestic violence to schizophrenia; this movie can definitely be described as disturbing, to say the least. As one of the tag lines state..."paranoia is contagious." The "R" rating is due to strong violence, sexuality, nudity, language and drug use.
All in all the movie should be fantastic. You can't go wrong with Ashley Judd and you certainly can't go wrong with some good scares to get your heart pumping.
I am so psyched that the third Pirates movie will be out this coming weekend. The anticipation is being felt by more than just me. Fandango e-mailed customers today to let them know they can pre-order tickets now. This far in advance!
My son loves pirates and enjoyed the first two movies. He never seems to tire of imagining he is Captain Jack Sparrow. He wears a "pirate belt," and runs around with his "pirate sword" nearly every day.
Me, well, I love Johnny Depp so I'm perfectly content watching these movies. PLus they're very entertaining. The cast is amazing. And so the countdown begins!
There is this cool site called Bid4Prizes and since I am an avid E-Bayer I thought I would check it out. The item which most fantastically stood out when I went to their website to check out the goods is the Panasonic 42" Plasma TV that comes with a BOSE DVD Theater System. You can see the lowest bid on their site. I so want a Plasma TV, the picture quality and sleekness is unmatchable. And to have a BOSE theater system would be incredible, because they you would have equally awesome audio to add to the picture. That would be such an amazing win; especially for someone like me who obsesses over movies and has a DVD collection that is more vast than her wardrobe.
Seeing flicks on this tv with a BOSE theater system is the stuff that my movie addict dreams are made of.
You should definitely check out the site and see if there is something you’d like to cash in on. Even if it means competing against me for the TV. =o)
The movie Happy Feet seemed like a kiddy movie. I am only 12 years old so a bunch of dancing penguins are not something I would really want to watch, but on the last day before Easter Vacation my teacher made the day easy. By the time I went back to homeroom for class the movie was about 20 minutes in. I thought the movie would be incredibly boring. It turns out I was wrong.
It is about a penguin named Mumbles who cannot sing like every other penguin in the world. Unlike all of the other penguins Mumbles has a gift of dancing. This is not normal for a penguin but his father dropped him when he was an egg. Everyone thinks that he is not a penguin because of the lack of his ability to sing. There is one girl on the other hand who thinks that he is unique and it does not matter that he cannot sing. Her name is Gloria.
When Mumbles is told that he cannot graduate the leader of the penguins thinks he is bad and when Mumbles ruins a party he is sent away. He faced a sea lion and landed on shore where there are four penguins who I thought made the movie so great. The always funny Robin Williams stars as Ramon the leader of the four. He also stars of Lovelace who is the guru of the island.
Humans keep taking all of the fish so the penguins have no food and begin to starve. Mumbles finds a cruise ship with a lot of fish and he follows it up to the shore of New York City. He is put in an aquarium and dances fr a little girl. Then hundreds of people see him dancing and apparently this is a big deal. The whole world finally knows about this. Mumbles goes back to the island where he was born and he gets everyone to dance in front of the so called "aliens" hoping that they will get the message to stop taking the fish from the animals that need it.
It is really good if you see the whole thing. It is especially good if you have a funny two year old niece watching it with you.
Sylvester Stallone still packs a punch with the new and exciting Rocky Balboa movie. It is a great movie staring the fantastic Sylvester Stallone who stars as the American Hero from out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rocky Balboa. The old man shows his youthfulness by coming out from being a retired legend and he shows the new school that they can't hang with the old school. His son doesn't think his dad should do it but Rocky whooped the competition and made his only son respect him just a little more. It is very good and I bought it on DVD the very first day. If I had the time I would include this movie into my everyday life. It also teaches a lesson that you should never give up no matter the circumstances. Everyone I know was motivated to go the distance when they saw this awesome movie.
If you are looking for an uplifting and motivating movie to watch, I highly recommend buying or renting "The Pursuit of Happyness" it is absolutely amazing!
Secondly, there has been a tragic event overseas due to a tsunami that has wiped out entire villages on the Solomon Islands and left hundreds of people missing. Reports are stating that an earthquake of magnitude 8 is what caused the tsunami. I know that the Red Cross has begun their relief efforts already, I just ask that if you can help in anyway, please do. Even if your only means of helping is prayer. =o)
Spider-man 3 is something I am very much looking forward to AND I've just read that Snow Patrol's song "Signal Fire" will be appearing somewhere on the soundtrack. Woohoo!
Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal will be taking Katie Holme's place in the upcoming new Batman movie "The Dark Knight" which should be released tentatively on July 18, 2008. We will also be seeing Heath Ledger who will be playing The Joker.
We all know how much I love Johnny Depp. So when I read that his daughter is ill it saddened me. I know I don't know them, but being a parent myself I imagine it is difficult for him. It would be for me.
It's not just the sniffles either, it is apparently quite serious. The seven-year-old has been sick for nine days now. This article states that a vigil will be held at her bedside.
And yes, I will be adding her to my prayer list. =o)

In other news, you may be interested to know what M. Night Shyamalan is doing. This I learned yesterday; he has signed on to make thriller The Happening in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Reports say it will be his first R-rated film.
Oh I'll be buying this one...and an extra for back-up. =o)
The Platinum Edition of Disney's animated Peter Pan came out on DVD yesterday. It also was sent to Braeden in the mail because I had pre-ordered it. And I do love the Disney version, but my favorite version of Peter Pan is much newer.
And here are some clips, since I am such a sap I got all teary eyed while watching. But I so love this movie! And the song that this woman put with the clips (she did it for her husband so it's very sweet).
Oooh and here are clips going along with a beautiful song from one of my favorite movies (that I do not yet own) "Simply Irresistable."
Just in case anyone was worried about Daniel Radcliffe since all of his smoking and nudity publicity...(people need to stop being so ridiculous and let him grow up!)...I just want you to know he will be Harry Potter for the rest of the movies. He is officially signed for the last two films.
I'll be the first to admit that though I am an avid reader, I have never read this book. Which I probably should have read to Brae before taking him to see the movie. Perhaps then I could have prepared myself better for the sob fest that occurred midway through the movie and ceased when the movie was over.
The story is about two children who feel like outsiders. They wind up being the best of friends and they build each others confidence whilst also creating a magical imaginary land...Terabithia. Jess and Leslie are King and Queen of Terabithia and they rule the Kingdom. There are fantastical creatures and a dark lord that also inhabit this kingdom and the adventures they have are a joy to watch.
Leslie inspired me immensely. She was such a free spirit, true to herself no matter what. Plus, I loved the way she dressed.
Aside for the story, the music in this movie was amazing. Jeremy Camp's voice made an appearance which I was happy about. He is also on the Narnia soundtrack. Aaron Zigman did a great job with the instrumentals. The music enhanced the magical feel and it also deepened the sadness. Perhaps that is just because music is entirely emotional for me anyway.
So. Braeden tells me he liked the movie. There were times when he was sad and he leaned against me in the seat. But there were also times when he laughed out loud and even put his arms up in excitement when Jess was protecting Leslie from the possessed squirrel creatures. I don't think he understood all of the plot, but I do think he enjoyed the movie. And it's always fun for me to see his reactions to everything.
The only downfall to the outing was that while waiting in line to get pretzels and fruit punch, someone moved our coats and took the seats we saved. So by the time we got back in the theater since it took 30 minutes to get pretzels...we ended up having to sit in the front row. Brae was fine with it and though I would have preferred to sit farther away it really didn't matter when I saw how entranced he was with the big screen. =o)
Oh it is no secret that I love Will Smith. Don't act surprised.
But what you might not have known is that "The Pursuit of Happyness" is set to come out on DVDVD on March 27, 2007. And you better believe I have it pre-ordered!
And sooner than that, "Stranger than Fiction" will be out on February 27, 2007. Ummm...yes...I pre-ordered that, too. Consider it a late Valentine gift to myself. And the "The Pursuit of Happyness" can be a late birthday gift to myself. See. That makes it all okay...haha...right?
