There are statistics from 2004 and 2005 to date, and there is a column to the far right which lists current investigations. Below this table is a written report of some of the criminal activity from the current posted week. There are 8 paragraphs describing burlargies, thefts and suspicious behavior. However there is nothing further written on the 6 hit-and-runs, 11 assaults, 28 disorderly conducts and a plethora of other current investigations that are being conducted. Keep in mind that those numbers are purely for investigations and criminals that have actually been charged are not included in those numbers. In fact this page states that during the week of 9/18/2005 - 9/24/2005 (which is the week my brother was assaulted and the last week the Newark Police have updated this portion of their site) that 669 calls came into the police department.
Why is this information so important? Because I know that it is not complete. I know that my brother's incident was not reported as an assault. In addition, I know that a week prior to this report another student was assaulted and had staples put in his head, but his assault was written out as an alcohol violation since he has been drinking and the University of Delaware police said he fell, which in actuality he and witnesses say he had been beaten. I have also learned that parts of the city are reported as University of Delaware property and so crime that happens on that property might also not be reported on this administration report.
Once again I am asking everyone to please speak out against the violence that is overwhelming the streets of Newark, Delaware in and around the University of Delaware campus.
Thank you,
Christy
