Dave Guy, a virtuoso trumpeter with over two decades of musical experience, has finally stepped into the spotlight with his debut solo album, “Ruby.” Known for his work with The Roots on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and as a member of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Guy has long been a sought-after session musician and collaborator. His distinctive sound has graced tracks by Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, and Bruno Mars, including the Grammy-winning hit “Uptown Funk”. Now, with “Ruby,” Dave showcases his unique musical voice, blending his jazz roots with the funk, soul, and hip-hop influences that have shaped his career. This album marks an exciting new chapter for the Manhattan-born musician, inviting listeners to experience the full range of his talent and artistry.
I’ll Follow You
Today, Dave Guy shares “I’ll Follow You,” the latest single from his recently announced debut album, Ruby. The track is a masterclass in counterbalance and composition.
The song features a strong breakbeat rhythm, balanced by Dave’s horn lines that add a serene quality to the track. The melodies use call and response techniques and effective use of space, while Dave’s delicate delivery enhances the overall sound. These elements combine to create music that appeals to a diverse audience. Dave’s music has an intangible quality that makes it relatable and accessible, stemming from the combination of its various components and influences.
“I’ll Follow You” follows early singles “7th Heaven,” which features backing vocals by Clairo’s Claire Cottrill, “Footwork” and “Morning Glory.” Last month, Big Crown Records also released a live version of “Footwork,” filmed at Diamond Mine Studio in Queens, New York. It also happens to be the same studio where the album was recorded.
A writer’s strike catalyst
In a serendipitous turn of events, Dave Guy’s debut album emerged from an unexpected opportunity. “I never wanted to force my own project,” Dave reflects. “The timing never seemed right with so much going on.” However, when the 2023 Writers’ Strike paused production on The Tonight Show, a window of creativity suddenly opened.
Seizing the moment, Dave dove into recording at NYC’s legendary Diamond Mine studio, collaborating with longtime friends Homer Steinweiss and Nick Movshon. What began as a casual creative session quickly evolved into something extraordinary. Within days, they had crafted a collection of songs that not only showcased Dave’s musical prowess but also offered listeners a glimpse into his unique perspective.
The result is a wildly special and authentic album inviting listeners into Dave Guy’s world as he experiences and interprets it. This unexpected pause in his busy schedule became the catalyst for a project that had been waiting for just the right moment to come to life.
