Franklin Castle, also known as the Tiedemann House, was constructed between 1881 and 1883 by Hannes Tiedemann, a prosperous German immigrant who made his fortune in banking and wholesale groceries. Designed by the prominent architectural firm Cudell & Richardson, the house exemplifies the Queen Anne style with its asymmetrical façade, elaborate turrets, and intricate stonework.

The castle features:

  • Four stories with over 20 rooms
  • More than 80 windows
  • Ornate stonework and intricate wood carvings
  • Beautiful stained glass windows
  • Turrets and gargoyles
  • Hidden passageways and secret rooms (though some dispute their existence)

The house was originally intended as a family home but quickly became a site of sorrow. The opulent design starkly contrasts the grim events that unfolded within its walls.

A History Marked by Tragedy

An unsettling series of deaths marred the Tiedemann family’s life in Franklin Castle. Shortly after moving in, Hannes’s fifteen-year-old daughter Emma died from complications related to diabetes. This tragedy was followed by the death of his elderly mother Wiebeka, and over the next few years, three more children died in infancy. By 1895, Hannes’s wife Louise succumbed to liver disease.

Repeated losses sparked whispers of a family curse, with rumors hinting at Hannes’s involvement in their untimely demise. The house’s dark reputation began almost immediately after these events, fueling speculation about hidden secrets within its walls.

Franklin Castle is not just known for its architectural beauty but also for its ghostly inhabitants. The lore surrounding the mansion includes numerous accounts of paranormal activity:

  • Emma Tiedemann’s Spirit: Many believe Emma’s spirit lingers in the castle, often reported as a crying girl seen wandering the halls.
  • The Woman in Black: A mysterious figure believed to be a former maid who may have suffered at the hands of Hannes Tiedemann himself. Sightings of this ghostly woman have been frequent among visitors.
  • Unexplained Phenomena: Residents and guests have reported flickering lights, cold spots, disembodied voices, and even physical sensations like choking when near certain rooms.

The Romano family tried to turn the castle into a restaurant in the 1960s but faced numerous supernatural occurrences. Their experiences included sightings of ghostly figures and unexplained noises that led them to seek exorcisms.

A Cultural Icon

Over the years, Franklin Castle has served various purposes—from a cultural center for German immigrants to a tourist attraction featuring ghost tours. Its reputation as one of Ohio’s most notorious haunted sites has drawn paranormal enthusiasts and curious visitors alike.

In recent years, after extensive renovations by new owners, Franklin Castle has opened its doors for overnight stays. With a chance to stay for hours at a time, guests can experience its eerie charm firsthand. This revival has sparked renewed interest in its rich history while maintaining its architectural integrity.
