Falling in Love with The Midnight

The Midnight album cover

Have you ever had a song hit you so hard that it completely changes your vibe? That’s exactly what happened to me during a boxing session on the Meta Supernatural VR app a couple of weeks ago. One moment, I’m throwing punches, focused on my workout – and then boom! – this incredible track starts playing, and suddenly, I’m moving to the beat like I’m in an ‘80s action movie montage.

The song? “Sunset” by The Midnight. And let me tell you, it was love at first synth.

Since then, I’ve had that boxing session on repeat just to hear the song again (who knew virtual boxing could turn into a music discovery tool?). But it didn’t stop there—I dove deep into The Midnight’s discography, and now, I’m completely hooked. My car rides? Full-volume jam sessions. My office? A subtle synthwave sanctuary.

And let’s talk about my top three absolute favorite tracks:

“Lost Boy” – An anthem of nostalgia, self-discovery, and raw emotion. It’s one of those songs that makes you want to stare dramatically out of a window while contemplating life.

“Midnight” – The song that started it all! It’s got that perfect late-night neon-lit cityscape vibe, making you feel like you’re the main character in your own cyberpunk adventure.

“Los Angeles” – This track takes you on a cinematic journey through the city of dreams. It’s moody, atmospheric, and just hits differently when you’re driving at night.

Who Are The Midnight?

If you’re new to the synthwave scene, The Midnight is a duo made up of singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle and producer Tim McEwan. They formed in 2012, inspired by the ‘80s aesthetic, electronic soundscapes, and the iconic soundtrack from the movie Drive. They blend dreamy nostalgia with modern electronic production, making music that feels like a time machine back to a world of neon lights, arcade games, and long summer nights.

Their Discography: A Synthwave Goldmine

If you’re looking to explore their sound, here’s where to start:

🎵 Days of Thunder (2014) – Their debut EP that set the tone for their signature synthwave sound.
🎵 Endless Summer (2016) – Featuring “Sunset,” another one of my faves! This album is a warm, dreamy escape.
🎵 Nocturnal (2017) – A darker, moodier side of The Midnight, full of deep vibes and powerful beats.
🎵 Kids (2018) – A nostalgic trip through childhood memories, full of hope and bittersweet energy.
🎵 Monsters (2020) – Synthwave meets indie pop in a beautiful, emotional fusion.
🎵 Heroes (2022) – Their most recent album, evolving their sound while staying true to that Midnight magic.

Are They Still Performing? Are They on Tour?

YES! The Midnight is still making music and performing, though Tim McEwan has stepped back from touring to focus on producing. If you want to catch them live (which I now desperately want to do), check out their official website or social media for tour updates.

Final Thoughts: The Midnight is a Vibe

If you haven’t given The Midnight a listen yet, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re working out, cruising through the city, or just chilling at home, their music fits every mood. They’ve officially taken over my playlists, and if you love synth-driven, emotional, and cinematic music, they will take over yours too.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have another boxing session to absolutely dominate—powered by The Midnight, of course. 😉🥊🎶
